The effects of Dupilumab treatment were beyond expected for a 13-year-old girl with a history of atopic dermatitis and alopecia totalis. The young teen has suffered from treatment-resistant atopic dermatitis since seven months old and from alopecia totalis since the age of two. Her treatment history for alopecia areata includes a variety of methods: prednisone, methotrexate and full-body narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy. These methods have helped others suffering from alopecia areata but did not lead to new hair growth for her.
The young girl was prescribed Dupilumab for eczema, and Maryanne Makredes Senna, M.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston was taken back by the effects, “To our shock and surprise, after six weeks of therapy, the patient started to develop small vellus hairs, and by nine months had thick terminal hairs that had never grown on her head since age two.” “This was a completely unexpected response to Dupilumab.” The young girl experienced hair regrowth on approximately 60 percent of her scalp.
Dr. Senna notes that a major limitation of the study is the sample size, being that of just one patient. Regardless, she claims that the strength of the study is the fact that the patient experienced significant hair regrowth after 11 years.
Dr. Senna and her colleagues are submitting a study proposal to Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, which makes Dupilumab. This proposal includes a larger group of patients so to more accurately evaluate the effect of Dupilumab on hair regrowth.

Melasma – a pigmentary skin condition in which dark patches appear on the face.
Although there is no known way to cure the condition completely, it can be treated. One of the best ways to combat this type of hyper – pigmentation is triple topical combination therapy. It is one of many off-label methods used to decrease symptoms. Although topical second – line agents are almost as effective, most of the best treatments for this type of condition are off-label.
Causes of Melasma
Genetics are the only cause of melasma, but sunlight can make symptoms worse. It is quite common, but predominantly among ethnic groups with darker skin tones. Epidermal melasma is more common than dermal melasma, sometimes even called a mark of pregnancy, because it appears in one in three pregnant women. One way to detect symptoms is to check for subtle or more noticeable marks on the left side of the face.
Prevention of Melasma
One of the best ways to prevent melasma is to inhibit melanicitis. Avoid the sun by using hats and large spectrum sunscreens, including physical blockers. These blockers can prevent the effects of UVB and UVA rays, as any amount of sunlight will worsen skin conditions. Those who have the best treatment results are those who have suffered for the least amount of time. Get treatment for your condition as soon as possible.
